Alumnae in Agriculture connect with students for National Science Week

Thanks to Rhonda Daly ('71) and Erin Burns ('98) for joining our National Science Week festivities. Our students gain a lot from connecting with alumnae role models in STEM. Watch the recordings here!

We were delighted to have two LN alumnae return virtually to participate in National Science Week with our students. The 2021 theme for National Science Week is ‘Food: Different by Design.’ Special thanks to Rhonda Daly (’71) and Erin Burns (‘98) who presented to our students about the role of science, agriculture, sustainability and food production in their careers.

Connecting directly with alumnae is an ideal way for students to see where their learning can take them beyond the classroom. Female role models in STEM inspire our students to think creatively about their futures, so we thank Rhonda and Erin wholeheartedly for volunteering their time.

Rhonda Daly (’71) recently joined the ranks of our Golden Jubilarian alumnae, celebrating 50 years since graduating from Loreto Normanhurst. Born and raised in Young, Rhonda now manages a mixed farm on its outskirts with her husband, Bill.

Rhonda is a pioneer of biologically regenerative farming. As Managing Director and co-founder of YLAD Living Soils, she aims to improve soil health in the agriculture industry and in turn produce healthier plants and animals for healthier humans and healthier planet. Rhonda spoke with our students about the role of living soils in sequestering carbon to help with climate change, as well as about what it means to be a women in a male-dominated field.

Erin Burns (’98) is the Head of Commodity Risk Management at Mauri – George Weston Foods, specialising in grain. She spoke to students about the variety of opportunities available in Agriculture and Agribusiness, sharing about how her career has evolved and has seen her work with farmers and grain corps all the way to large corporations and retailers. Our students were fascinated to hear about the depth of science and data behind crop production, and the importance of science in advancing sustainability and innovation in the food and agriculture industries. Erin challenged students to always think critically about their learning and to ask ‘how can I use this?’ and ‘why is this important?’ She also shared fond memories of her biology classes with Mrs Evans while at Loreto!
