This week, we announced the new School Captains for the 2021-2022 year. For this Flashback Friday, we remember some of the many School Captains that have graciously lead our School across the years.
Did you know that our first ever 'Head of School' was Mary Campbell, appointed in 1921? Which means that 2021 marks the 100th year of School Captains at LN! This forms part of a long Loreto tradition of student leadership, all called to serve and lead their peers in the pursuit of justice, felicity, sincerity, verity and freedom.
Over the years, the title has been referred to by many names - Head of School, Head Girl, School Captain. Prefects were also referred to as Councillors. By the mid 1960's, the modern titles that we are more familiar with were introduced. As most girls attended LN as boarders in the earlier decades, there wasn't a distinct 'Boarder Captain' until day-girl enrolments began to increase.
You'll often be able to 'spot' a Loreto School Captain wearing the School Captain's Cross, which is still a treasured item at our School. Each year, the name of the School Captain is also inscribed on the Head of School board, hanging near our Boarding School.
Take a look at some of these images featuring our Normo School Captains, and see if you recognise any familiar faces.
Who was the Captain in your graduating year? Do you have a family member who served as a School Leader? Can you remember something special the Captains or Prefects did during your time at LN? Share your memories of school leadership with us in the comment section below, or in the 'Have Your Say' section.
