The Mary Ward Justice Forum is an annual collaboration between Loreto Normanhurst and Loreto Kirribilli exploring and promoting issues of justice in line with the values and teachings of Mary Ward and the Loreto Sisters and the priorities of the Loreto Justice Network.

The inherent dignity of each individual is a fundamental principle that underscores the essence of human rights and justice. In this thought-provoking forum, we will delve into this profound concept looking in our own backyard and the need for increased rights for all.  

Three distinguished guest speakers will guide us through an exploration of this multifaceted topic, offering valuable insights from different perspectives and shedding light on the often marginalised of society – those in prison, women and children. In a world that often races ahead, we have the opportunity to pause and reflect on a fundamental truth that unites us all – the intrinsic worth that resides within every human being.

Facilitator: 

Mrs Emma Simkin has worked as a journalist for public broadcasters, the ABC and SBS, for over 27 years. Emma works across all mediums - television, radio and online - covering a range of issues from natural disasters such as the 2019/20 Black Summer Bushfires to international sporting events, including Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup. Currently based on the NSW Central Coast, Emma compiles and presents the local ABC radio news bulletins and is currently hosting the Saturday Breakfast program on ABC Newcastle. Emma is also strongly engaged in the local community, volunteering her time particularly in local schools where she assists with debating and public speaking. Emma is a mother of four and graduated Loreto Normanhurst in 1990.

Presenters: 

Sr Jwan Kada is an accomplished educator and social justice advocate. Her focus lies in the plight of young people within the juvenile justice system, and she brings a compassionate perspective that stems from her involvement with the Cana community in Sydney. Her insights will provide valuable context to the challenges faced by young individuals and the quest for justice within the criminal justice system.

Mr Richard Korkor is a Chaplain at RPA and Parklea prison who is actively engaged in working with individuals at the margins of society, including those in the prison system. His perspective is deeply informed by his experiences at the maternity and cancer wards, as well as his work at Parklea prison as a chaplain. Richard will shed light on the intersection of human dignity and justice within these contexts. Richard is a current Loreto Normanhurst parent to Evelyn and Amelia, and also has two boys Isaac and Xavier. 

Ms Catherine Knox seeking to drive positive social change, and with a mission to promote understanding and inspire action, Catherine collaborates with stakeholders from both the profit and for purpose sectors. With over 20 year's experience in leadership and women's advocacy, Catherine speaks to diverse audiences. Catherine is a published author with post graduate qualifications in Gender Studies and Social Impact Business. She was founding CEO of Gidget Foundation Australia and she currently teaches at the University of Sydney and facilitates Domestic Violence Prevention programs. Catherine is Chair of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter.
