In Terms 2 and 3 each year, the Loreto Normanhurst community participates in a social justice initiative called Wrap with Love. Students, staff, families and community members knit squares to create blankets that are sent to the most vulnerable people, locally and globally. Last year, as a community we knitted 23 blankets which were sent to war-torn Armenia.
Knitting squares is a great mindfulness activity during lockdown and a welcome distraction from the events around us. It is a lovely way to channel feelings of worry or stress into creating something that will bring warmth and hope to another person.
Interested in participating? Do you know someone in your family or community who would like to be part of this initiative?
Squares can be knitted or crocheted from any colour of 8 ply wool. Knitters will need to use 4 mm needles and cast-on 50 stitches. Each square should measure 25 cm by 25 cm.
Never knitted before? Don’t worry, there are lots of online resources to teach you how to cast-on, knit and cast-off and are easy to follow.
Students can drop off squares to Ms Clancy in the DRC when face-to-face teaching resumes. Alumnae and other community members can post to the school via “Wrap with Love, c/o Loreto Normanhurst 91 – 93 Pennant Hills Road, Normanhurst NSW 2076.”
Squares will be collected right up until the end of Week 1, Term 4 (Friday, 8 October 2021).
